simplify to amplify
Designing your own style and creating an image that reflects who you are might seem like a big effort, but we have looked at how you can address several of the influences and make things work for you. The best advice I can give you is to keep things simple. You don’t need as many items as you might think to create a whole lot of different outfits, as long as you have put in the work beforehand.
Can you collate your clothes into a few colour choices? Whether you have had your ‘colours’ done, or do a quick test to determine your tonal range (are you warm or cool toned), you will be able to make choices that your items work together well. When you can wear more of your clothes together, you will need fewer of them to create different outfits. If you find that you have a mix of cool and warm tones in your wardrobe, this could be the answer to why you’re never quite sure of what will go with what.
Have you got space to put unseasonable clothes away so that you don’t have to push through thick trousers trying to find your chino shorts, or heavy knitwear when you want a silky T-shirt? If you haven’t got space to put things somewhere separate, why not invest in a heavy zipped clothes bag and group your unseasonable things together at one end of your cupboard?
Having fewer things, keeping the colour palette limited rather than a riot of hues (unless this is your favoured approach), and being able to see what you have, will mean that your choices will become much simpler. You can then reflect who you are and how you feel at any time. Do you want to look smart, or edgy, or casual, or stunning, or elegant, or trendy? If everything is at your fingertips, any, or all of the above looks will be easy to pull off.
